The first team rugby squad took a trip to Kingswood for their first rugby encounter for over two years. Captain Chaffey won the decision to play with the wind in the first half. After a long journey we had a shortened warm up which was noticeable in the first quarter, as Kingswood kicked the game off with an opening try. As a group we picked ourselves up very quickly and looked very threatening at the end of the first quarter. As we entered the next stage of the game, we became much more clinical in final part of the pitch and our first try of the game had now come. A pick from the ruck and a dash down the blindside wing from Alvarez saw Taunton’s first points. After this we felt fully in control of the game. Our next points were an executed kick across the pitch from Nuttycombe to allow Alvarez to pace it down the wing for Taunton’s next try. Another try came in quick succession as the forwards were now dominating and a strong carry from Shave allowed him to hustle over the line. The similar situation occurred again with a strong carry from Woolstencroft and a tidy offload, Shave dotting down another try for Taunton. The forwards were now dominating in the final quarter of the pitch with Ashby making a strong carry to blast through Kingswood defence, getting brought down just before the line. This allowed a pick from Barrett to fight over the line bringing Taunton’s penultimate try. The final try was a well-executed back’s move with Dietz running a vital dummy line, allowing Chaffey to receive the ball and break through Kingswood back line, this created a ‘two on one’ allowing Chaffey to set Houghton-King up with a quality finish from Houghton-King. Taunton’s defence was looking much better, and many turnovers were being completed now. Likewise, with this, strong tackles from Dietz, Way and Stuckey showed real authority to the opposition. The final score was 36-7 and Taunton completing a comprehensive win. Overall, a positive start to the season with many aspects to work on. Special mentions to the boys making their first team debut and we are all looking forward to hitting training properly next week.
