Match Report
Taunton School Boys-U15A (JCA) vs  Haberdashers' Monmouth Schools
On: Saturday, 14 Oct 2023
Venue: Away

The Taunton U15A team came storming back after the disappointment of their Round 2 defeat to Blundells in the NatWest Cup on Tuesday. After much soul searching and team ethos building, the squad were hungry for this away trip to Monmouth.

The boys started confidently and were presented with an early opportunity for 3 points from a penalty in front of the posts, which Jack Blackwell slotted. From 1-15 the Taunton players were running with confidence, communicating well, and finding space in their opponent’s defensive line. From a well-built move, in which all the team contributed, Ollie Wotton - Perry scored out wide, with Blackwell converting. The back line was looking a lot more cohesive and dangerous, and when you paired that with a Taunton pack who were marauding in the loose, Monmouth knew they were in for a long afternoon. Next Harrison Perrone finished off a great move which saw us go from 5m to 5m, stretching the opposition defence. This meant we went into the break with a 17-0m lead.

For the second half, some positional changes were made, along with the return of 'power prop' Dylan Holberry returning from injury. Taunton's next try was special, from our own 10m line, the Taunton pack kept the ball alive, with Heryck Gallimore and Artem Barbariush interlinking to make plenty of yards, Artem received the ball back to power through the defence and crash over. A slow kicking tee meant that Blackwell had to drop goal the conversion from out wide, not a task he was daunted by!

Monmouth hit back and were running with more intent at this point. Taunton lacked their earlier enthusiasm for tackling and defensive organisation which led to a 10 minute period of dominance for the home team. But back came Taunton, Holberry capping off a strong return with a try from short range.

The team were ecstatic with the win, and now look forward to a trip to Millfield after HT.

Other mentions go to the centre combination of du Toit and Colbourne who got us going forward and wide at the right points in the game. To Bertie Knowles who led us from the front, and Charlie McGuiness who looked quick and evasive every time he touched the ball. A real team performance from the U15A, well done all!
