Match Report
Taunton School Boys-U15A (JCA) vs  Sherborne School
On: Saturday, 07 Oct 2023
Venue: Away

A real gut wrencher for the U15A team! To loose with the last play of the game is disappointing, but we will come back stronger as a team from such experiences.

Taunton took an early lead with a penalty from Jack Blackwell, following good pressure at the breakdown forcing a infringment from Sherborne for 'holding on'.

The rest of the first half was spent back and forth, with both teams making good inrodes into their opposition's half. It was Sherborne who scored the first try with some accurate handling creating space for their winger to side step our last defender to score.

Half time gave Taunton the opportunity to take stock and figure out how to get around Sherborne's blitz defence, and that new tactic came into play early in the 2nd half when Theo Bennett rounded his opposite number from 13, making huge ground into their territory, the fabulous play was converted by Charlie McGuiness who scythed through the remaining defenders at pace to finish under the posts.

It was a productive first 15 minutes of the half, because once again Taunton found themselves in the opposition half from a combination of strong runnings from the centres Bennett and Colbourne, but also a '50-22' kick from Jack Blackwell which gave up the attacking platform to score. Heryck Gallimore went on another rampaging run, barging over from 10m out. Both tries had been converted giving Taunton a 17-7 lead.

It was now Sherborne's turn to exert the pressure, and with Taunton conceding territory with poor tackle technique and commiting penalties, the home side came back into the game. Scoring out wide, but not converting set up a tense final 6 minutes. Sherborne were camped in the Taunton 22, and silly decision making at the ruck and scrum meant Taunton could not ease the pressure. Eventually Sherborne broke the stalwart Taunton defence with a try and conversion under the posts to win it!

Lots of good things came out of the game, with also 'work ons' identified. Luckily for the boys it is a tight turnaround for our cup game journey to Blundells on Tuesday 10th October, so a swift opportunity to demonstrate 'bouncebackability' for the U15A team.

MOM - Nic du Toit for his constant work rate and hard carries to get us over the gain line.
