Match Report
Taunton School Boys-U15B (JCB) vs  Collegiate
On: Saturday, 30 Sep 2023
Venue: at Home

Taunton arrived on Uppers with a point to prove after throwing the game away last week. The warm up was loose, baggy even. But the boys got their heads into the game and started brightly with crisp handling and effective rucking causing plenty of problems for Collegiate. Maynard took a well-deserved try before poor Taunton tackling allowed Collegiate over the line for an easily-kickable try. But they missed; all square. Taunton's quick rucking speed again made dents in the opposition territory before Rampaul touched down by the posts. Maynard's conversion sailed over the upright; again, extras came there none. Grundy's effective running saw him over in the corner, a stellar conversion by White added for 17-5. Then, a lineout move straight from the training ground, executed perfectly by Graddon, saw another try chalked on. Collegiate hit back, again thanks to poor Taunton defence, before Graddon's second put the game out of reach. After a spell of poor discipline saw Taunton down to 14 men, Collegiate saw their chance. Advantage after advantage in the red zone before they hit back for a finely-worked try. No conversion - a kicking curse surely affecting both teams - but Taunton made sure in the dying stages of the game to keep the ball and see out the win. Taunton's ruck speed, particularly in attack, was a genuine threat but silly offloads, poor discipline and occasional poor decision-making meant that a few points were left unclaimed. We look ahead to Sherborne next week with an eye on improving standards all round. Much to work on.
